Home Interior Design Project

The student will design a room. This assignment will involve the following components:

•    Choose a room: bedroom (13 ft. x 15 ft.), living room (14 ft. x 18 ft.), or den/office (12 ft. x 12 ft.). Describe occupant: who are they and what are their needs.
•    Select furnishings and accessories from online list of sources (copy, paste and save to print later)
•    Draw a floor plan (limited by teacher)
•    Create furniture templates (made to comply with the exact measurements of  the  furniture selected
•     Arrange furniture.
•    Select wall color and fabric.
•    Create an attractive simple display board:
o    Floor plan
o    Pictures of furniture and accessories, total cost
o    Wall color selection, Flooring selection
o    Fabric selection (upholstery or bed linens, drapery)

Timeline:
Day 1:
1.    Determine type of room you will decorate and the occupant and their needs.
a.    Select furniture (minimum 6 pieces)
2.     Into PowerPoint format record the following information
a.    Store
b.   Pictures of furniture
c.   Dimensions of furniture (length and width)
d.    Cost
e.    Select 3 accessories to complete the look.

Day 2
1.    Draw floor plan
2.    Select paint (paint swatches provided) and any fabric (actual fabric swatch or picture from a magazine or catalog.), and flooring.
3.    Draw color and cut out furniture templates
4.    Arrange furniture keeping in mind the Principles of Design and traffic patterns

Day 3 
1.    Arrange display board
a.   Brief description of occupant and his needs.
b.   Floor plan indicating room size and furniture layout
c.    Wall color – paint swatch/es
d.    Fabric selections (picture or swatch)
e.    Pictures of furniture style with brand, cost, and material composition information
f.    Pictures of 3 accessories (time permitting)

5.    Turn in. (Extension of 2 days is permitted without penalty as long as you have been steadily working during class)

Requirements:
Floor Plan
Rooms must include 2 standard doors (30 inches) and 2 or 3 windows 36 inches in width. The windows may be placed separately or together to form a large picture window. Remember windows affect the placement of furniture.

Dimensions: bedroom (13 ft. x 15 ft.), living room (14 ft. x 18 ft.), or den/office (12 ft. x 12 ft.).

Tips:
1.    To create the furniture templates you only need to know length and width. The height is not important unless it is being placed under a window. We will assume that the window begins 3ft. about the floor.
2.    Furniture is usually measured in inches.
3.    Our floor plans are measured in feet. 1 square equals 1 square foot.
You will have to change the inches measurements to feet in order to create your furniture templates.

Remember:
12 inches = 1 foot     
Example: the dresser is 83 inches long and 17 inches wide.
83/ 12= 6.9 ft. Round up to the nearest ½ foot, so 7 ft.
17 inches = 1 ft. and 5 inches; so 1.5 ft.
The template would be 7ft. by 1.5 ft. or 7 squares long and 1.5 squares wide.
